Using Wallpaper to Change a Room to Retro

Sometimes you only need to change one thing in a room to change it completely into a new style. Wallpaper is one of those things. You can add wallpaper to one wall in a room to change the entire mood.

Lately, I have been writing about decorating in retro. One of the easiest ways to change your kitchen, bathroom or living room into a retro style room is by adding one of these retro designed wallpapers to one accent wall. These wallpapers are a hoot! For most rooms, it would only take one day to put the paper up, then you could see the results immediately.

The wallpaper featured above is a good example. York Wallcoverings KB8525 Bistro 750 Retro Leaves Prepasted Wallpaper comes in five different color combinations that can be used with almost any color scheme. It is a 50’s style design which would go great in a kitchen, entry or bathroom. You don’t have to want a retro look to use it, but it certainly can be used for that purpose.

Another use for a retro wallpaper, or actually any patterned design is to create wall art from it. You can see this done here with this Wall In A Box WIB1012 Retro Dots Wallpaper, Silver Metallic, Scarlet Red, Gloss Black, Steel Gray. This is a very cool look that can be easily done by hand at home. Just place the wallpaper over a frame or on top of an existing artist canvas. Staple it to the back, and hang. In this picture, the paper has been put on four canvases and placed in a 2 x 2 pattern. The dot geometric design is juxtaposed with the squareness of the canvases.

This is a wonderful wall accent for a den, living room, dining room or bedroom. It can also be used in a hallway or entryway. This is a particularly good idea if you rent the space you are living in, so you don’t need to replace the wallpaper. Just remove the nail you are hanging the frame with.

Unique Steel and Wood Maps for Home Decor

Dragonfly facts

Dragonflies are insect who belong to the order Odonata. Experts divide them into three sub-species: the largest true dragonflies called Anisoptera, the smaller damselfly called Zygoptera and Anisozygoptera which seems to be a combination of the first two.
They are easily recognisable as having large eyes, small antennae, slim segmented bodies, and 4 thin membranous wing in sets of 2. In dragonflies the rear pair of wings become broader at the base. Damselfly wings are all the same size.
Dragonfly eyes are set together close to the top of the head and they can see all around them. Damselflies eyes are situated slightly more to each side of the head.
They can vary in size from around 1 inch to 6 inches in some species.
So far something like 5680 different species of dragonfly have been recorded world-wide.
Dragonfly eyes are multifaceted. This means they can see in every direction – so they sense even tiny movements – all the better for hunting prey.
They eat mosquitos and other pests which makes them a great addition to your garden. Some people such as the Burmese, regularly release dragonfly nymphs into local water to keep down the population of mosquitoes.
The twin sets of wings gives the dragonflies the ability to fly in all sort of ways. They can hoover, fly fast or slow, even loop the loop. Their flying ability is one of the reasons they are so much fun to watch.

Using Retro Signs to Update Home Decor

One of the easiest ways to change the decor of any room is to change the accessories and wall art. Sometimes just changing the wall art alone can do the job.

For instance, if you want to change your bathroom from a modern look to a retro look, removing the modern artwork and replacing it with retro signs like the one pictured here, Mermaid Bath Salts, is a fast and easy way to do so.

Ideas for creating the right dragonfly look by decorating the walls

Ceramic wall tiles

Dragonflies

For bathrooms and kitchens add some ceramic tiles in relevant places, for example, as splash-backs. Use only 2 or 3 decorated ones mixed in with plain colored ones for maximum effect. As you can see from just this small sample, you have no color restrictions to worry you. Pick your favorite tile then use the colors in it for background color and in decor accents for a dramatic effect.

Decorate and Paint with Dragonfly Colors – Choosing

You are spoilt for choose in dragonfly colors – some look simple, blue or green or red, but if you look at a lot of them you will see how many dragonflies have multiple colors and incidentally, different textures, which you can introduce into decorating ideas.

The colors. Just like butterflies, dragonflies come in range of colors from soft pastels to bold and vibrant colors. You can find dragonflies in red and pink, fuchsia and orange, blue and saffron, gold and emerald, black browns and every shared shade you can think of. Added to that the metallic sheen of some and you have plenty of colors to choose from for you color scheme. Dragonfly wings can be translucent, simply transparent or they may be colored, spotted or banded. Generally the ones with clear wings tend to have vibrant colors on their body and tail. This pretty little thing gives us loads of ideas. It has pinks, purples, red, orange and blue and metallic grey or blue in the wings.

Dragonflies have a delicate, ethereal look to them that lends well to a themed decor. Just echoing dragonfly tones against a pastel background creates a great effect. Pick out one of tbe contrasting jewelled metallic tones as a block color in curtains, throws or bedding to bring out the theme. Your carpeting can be somewhere in between your pastel walls and bold accents. You are gradually creating your room. And introduce different textures like satin and lace to represent alternately the body and wings.

For example, note how dragonfly here looks green but you will also note there is a red spot, subtle orange on the neck and the wings look dark. You could then paint the walls of your room a matching green and use red and orange accents – then introduce the texture of the wings with lace.

Many species change color as they mature, or may vary as the temperature changes. Females may be differently colored from males. All dragonflies emerge with barely any color, although hints of the adult pattern may be visible.

One of the most fascinating things about dragonflies and color is that they can appear to change color depending on the light. What may seem like transparent wings turn iridescent in sunlight.

Once you decide to go for a dragonfly theme decor start off by picking base colors to build on. Look at pictures of dragonflies to pick out a color. It works best with a solid block color – a pastel shade that you would find in real dragonfly. For accent add a border featuring dragonflies either high up near the ceiling or at dado height.
